Wildside Adventure Race
Expedition Racing in Australia's North Coast Wilds
News Release / 01.10.2014

Expedition adventure races are multi-day multi-discipline events taking teams across long distances and varied landscapes. This is the ultimate in endurance racing. These style of races are about the journey. Teams navigate across a landscape collecting checkpoints while managing their own supplies and implementing sleep and nutrition strategies. Teams must be prepared for anything and be able to operate in harsh remote environments in all weather conditions.
The first question people ask when hearing about expedition adventure racing is “why would you want to do that?!” This is not surprizing when racers are travelling further in one race than some do in 6 months. Its gets better when you explain that the distance is covered on foot, by bike or paddling using nothing but a map, compass and you wits.
So why expedition adventure racing?
The answer can be different for each racer but there are some common themes. Often the chance to journey somewhere remote and new, explore, work as a team and extend themselves are reasons why. For others it is working with a team and overcoming obstacles; while for others it is a chance to switch off from modern day living and connect back with nature and themselves.
Australia’s newest expedition adventure race, Wildside Adventure Race, will hit Forster and surrounds in October (4 –12) and promises to deliver all this and more. It will take racers into the North Coast wilds as they navigate through spaces rarely visited and encounter various challenges as they traverse demanding landscapes.
“We are really looking forward to taking teams to some of our region’s most remote spaces” said Race Director, Richard Old, “the journey in creating this course has shown us a whole new side to the Mid North Coast and it really showcases how incredible this place we call home is.”
What makes this style of racing even harder is that the course is top secret and teams only receive the course the day before. This leaves them less than 24hrs to plan their race and equipment.
“This race will have everything - epic trek legs, demanding mountain biking ranging from flowing single track to rugged back country tracks, exposed ropes, white water and scenic paddle legs. The course is rich in history and will connect with some of the friendliest places in the region.” Mr Old continued.
