The final Stage 6 of the Atacama Crossing 2014 had a staggered start. The first half started at 9:30 and second with the race leaders at 10:00. The finish line is set up in the town square of San Pedro. There is a live band playing local Chilean music and most importantly pizza and soda. Family and friends gathered to the town square along with the staff and volunteers to cheer competitors in. They will also hand out medals to their loved ones.

First across the line was Gregory Lafitte at 10:16, still enough energy in his legs even though he even completed the Roving Race in Madagascar four weeks earlier. Just behind Greg as a second arrival was United States’ Johnny Brooks at 10:18. Julia Metcalfe was the first woman to join the celebrations.

The leaders caught up soon the first group – race winner Chema ran in at 10:33, waving the Spanish flag, crossed the line and then turned back and speeded in hand in hand with the leading team of Spaniards. The atmosphere at the finish line is incredible. "Yesterday I could barely walk, today I went through the pain barrier and just went for it", said Johnny Brooks as he arrived. "I pushed hard, because I really wanted pizza", was Gregory Lafitte’s rationale for his speedy finish.

Celebrations at the San Pedro town square continued as more finishers arrived. Erin Leighty and blind Brazilian competitor Vladmi Dos Santos were greeted with a grand cheer as they crossed the finish line. Father and volunteer Bob Leighty welcomed her daughter proudly. “Such spirit”, Erin said, "My ankles don't even hurt now. Adrenaline!".

Ian Bond from the United States crossed the finish line with the United Kingdom’s Martin Palethorpe who was dressed as Robin. Ian was greeted by his sister Heather who started the race with him. Ian was in need for a clean-up "I feel like I need to ask for a second bottle of shampoo to wash all this grit!". Rob Trepa, Brett Foote and Inia Raumati who's attempt is to complete the 4 Deserts Grand Slam this year ran in together, carrying a huge flag. Canadian Joseph Mauko, who recently recovered from a cancer, walked through the finish line with a wide smile, thanking everyone for being part of his experience.

A fellow Canadian Lishe O’Kiely was pleased with her week: “This old broad still got it!” Claude Begin cried as he hugged his dad at the finish line. They then cheered loudly as his brother Jean-Francois crossed the line.

A huge group picture was taken with all competitors at teh finih of another remarkable Atacama Crossing.
