The 24th Himalayan Run & Trek International Annual Events (Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race) went off successfully during October 18 – 22, 2014 in Darjeeling area, the North-East Himalayan ranges. Adventurers from 9 countries including UK, USA, Germany, Spain, South Africa, India, Argentina and El Salvador took part in the event. The Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race has been distinguished as one of the world’s most challenging and toughest endurance events with ‘AAA’ rating.
The Deputy Director, Local Govt. flagged off the race while admiring the efforts made by Mr. C S Pandey, Race Director in encouraging the runners from all over the world to see the unparalleled beauty of the Himalaya and promoting such a unique event.
Dr. Gabriel Seiberth (Germany) won the 24th International Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race with an overall time of 17 Hrs. 59 Min. and received the Sant Nagpal Baba Memorial Gold Award with the first prize. Second and third were Mr. David Jacobson (South Africa) with a time of 19 Hrs 21 min. and Mr. Stefan Schlett (Germany) with a time of 19 Hrs 56 min. respectively.
Ms. Sonja Braun (Germany) was the first female finisher with an overall time of 22.56. Second was Ms. Bryony McCormick (South Africa) in 24 Hrs 12 mins. and Ms. Dawn Long (USA) with a time of 26 hrs. 25 min was third.
The oldest participant was Mr. Garry Griffin from USA (65 Years) while the Award for environmental mission was presented to Ms. Rhiannon Turner from UK. The race finish rate was 94.28%.
The Executive Director, Local Govt. congratulated all the participants and also thanked Mr. C S Pandey, Race Director for his persistent efforts and single minded devotion for the promotion for sports tourism in Darjeeling through this event and mentioned that all credit goes to his organization. Various international magazines have described this race as “the most beautiful race in the world”.
The course traversed vast tea gardens, isolated jungles and small villages. Participants also got the opportunity to have a spectacular view of Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu (four out of five highest peaks in the world). According to the runners, the race trail is most beautiful and exciting. It also offers a rare and once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy the rhododendron forests which holds more than four thousand types of flowering plants and three hundred varieties of rare ferns.
Simultaneously the 20th Everest Challenge Marathon also took place on the third day of the Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race.
Mr. C. S. Pandey & Ms. Mansi Pandey were the Race Director and Asst. Race Director of the events. Dr. Neeraj Jain was the Race Medical Director for the event.
According to C S Pandey, “Eco-friendly adventure sport is the best way to enhance ones’ spirits and brighten life. Becoming one with nature is the most satiating experience one can have, as it helps to keep the body and mind in perfect condition.” The central ambition behind this eco adventure sport mission is to preserve the environment and heritage of the Indian Himalaya for future generations.”
