Rumble in the Jungle 2014
Ready to Rumble in the Jungle
News Release / 02.11.2014
The original “Rumble in the Jungle” was a heavy weight boxing match between George Foreman and Mohammad Ali, which took place in Kinshasa, Zaire in October 1974. Mohammad Ali won the fight with a knockout at the end of the 8th round and the contest was hailed as “arguably the greatest sporting event of the 20th century”
Fast forward 40years and another epic battle will be taking place, this time in the jungles of Sri Lanka. Replacing boxing champions will be some of the “heavy weights “ of the mountain bike world, all vying to be king of the jungle and take the lion’s share of the $20,000 prize money on offer.
Arriving on the beautiful tropical island over the next few weeks, amongst a very strong field of adventure driven riders, will be Cory Wallace (Canada), Ismael Ventura (Spain), Yuki Ikeda (Japan), Ajay Pandit Chhetri (Nepal), Sonya Looney (USA), Myriam Saugy (Switzerland), Kerstin Kogler(Germany), Hannah Barnes (UK), together with strong teams from the Sri Lankan air force and the Indian army adventure team
The field, who hold between them an impressive set of credentials, including Iron bike winner, Mongolia Bike Challenge winner, record holder for Bhutan’s Tour of the Dragon, Brasil ride winner, 2nd place in the Cape Epic, Yak Attack 2014 1st and 2nd place, (the list goes on), will not only be fighting for the large prize purse but also for places in the next race in TheYakAttack’s world challenge series, Alpac Attack, which will be awarded to the top male and female rider.
The race commences on November 19th and over 4 days will take riders on a 300km journey through the hot and humid jungles to the south of the island, through mountain hugging tea plantations of the central highlands and across Sri Lanka’s highest plateau before finally finishing at Kandy, one of the most important religious sites of the country.
The competition concludes with an almighty beach party at the resort of Negombo on November 23th, where the title sponsors, Sri Lanka Airlines, will crown the champions of the first ever “Rumble in the Jungle”, and where the top Sri Lankan finisher will be awarded with a place in the original Yak Attack, “The highest mountain bike race on earth” .
Follow the race live from November 17th where results, photos and videos will be uploaded daily to the event website –
