Team Featherbed Painted Wolf Ready for Expedition Africa

Sunday, 15th May 2016, Team Featherbed Painted Wolf line up with 53 other teams from 20+ Countries for an adventure of a life time. The 5th edition of Expedition Africa, a 500km non-stop, self-support adventure race will have teams of 4 race around Knysna and surrounding towns for the next 7 days. The top teams are expected to finish in a much shorter, but no less grueling 3 and half days.

Team Featherbed Painted Wolf is comprised of the Collins brothers of Magnet South, multi-sport legend Jeannie Dreyer and local Sea Rescue point man Darren Berry. Captain of the Knysna based team Featherbed Painted Wolf, Mark Collins say he and his three team mates cannot wait for Expedition Africa to start. The veteran racer who himself has participated in 3 World Championship races says it’s a real feather in the cap of Knysna Tourism to have secured the hosting such a high profile AR World Series event. “It will be surreal for us to see all these international teams racing in our own back yard.” With more than fifty teams from twenty nations set to descend on the town this week the anticipation in town has reached fever pitch.

In 2006 Mark Collins and his brother teamed up with Duzi King Martin Dreyer and multi-sport queen Michelle Lombardi as Team Mazda to notch up a fifth place in the in Canadian hosted World Championship.

Expedition Africa will start at 08h00 on Sunday from an undisclosed location, presumably in Knysna. The full race will comprise of 18 ‘legs’ and 15 ‘transitions’ with 5 main sporting disciplines including Trekking, Mountain Biking, Kayaking, Canyoneering and Rope Work.

This year, Team Painted Wolf partnered with the Featherbed Co as their headline sponsor. Ronnie Webster says, “We took to the decision to sponsor Team Featherbed/Team Painted Wolf to participate in this iconic race; knowing that our local teams will be very competitive and will represent Knysna and the Garden Route with pride. Featherbed is an iconic tourist destination in the heart of the Garden Route for more than 30 years. We are greatly humbled by the opportunity of hosting media teams from across the globe.”

Team Featherbed Painted Wolf also has support from Salomon South Africa and Squirt Lube SA. In addition, the team will be racing in hopes to raise more awareness for the role the NSRI plays in community safety. Mark Collins says the volunteer organisation is absolutely world class and is continually astounded by the effectiveness and level of dedication shown by its members.
