It’s the Kinetic Double Moon Adventure Race this weekend. Staged by the organising team behind Expedition Africa the race is designed to “prepare teams for Expedition Racing where racing at night and team dynamics is critical for a successful outcome”.

The courses offered are 100km or 200km, for either pairs or teams of 4 in any gender combination, to help make it easier to find a team and get involved, and this weekend there 38 teams heading for  Magoebaskloof, Limpopo to have a go.

The distances are roughly 60% Mountain biking, 25 % Trekking and 15 % Kayaking (with a dark zone), and as in a full Expedition Race teams can choose if, when and where to stop and sleep. The race starts Friday morning and runs through until Sunday afternoon.

One team taking part is the male pair, Team ‘Had The Biscuit’, comprised of Ico Schutte and Carel van Heerden.  Ico will be reporting on the race for SleepMonsters and pair has a very mixed multi-sport background.

Ico is a former international downhill mountain biker who moved onto endurance based MTB events like Cape Epic, BC Bike Race and La Ruta de Conquistadores before moving onto kayaking and rafting. His adventure races have included Expedition Africa in 2013 in the Drakensberg and Mind Over Mountain in Canada.  Carel also has 18 years of endurance and off-road competition behind him, plus an Expedition Africa completion, so they will make an experienced pairing, and we’ll look forward to hearing how they get on.

The race will have tracking and you can find out more and follow along at http://kinetic-events.co.za/Events/Double-Moon-Adventure over the long weekend.
