Length: 250 km
Location: Queenstown & The Southern Lakes Area
The Queenstown 45 Adventure Race will give you a true taste of multi-day racing in the incredible environs of Queenstown and The Southern Lakes. The race will offer significant off-trail trekking, challenging navigation and real wilderness experiences on completely unmarked courses. Our goal is to test your limits in a true adventure format where you will be challenged only by what the wilderness has to offer.

The racecourse has been designed and tested by internationally experienced adventure racers and will take you through roughly 250 kms of some of the most beautiful wilderness in New Zealand. With careful planning we intend to make the Queenstown 45 achievable for first-time adventure racers, but our key aim is to challenge any level of competitor.

We will also be offering what we call Bootie challenges on course. The Bootie Concept is to challenge competitors to think a little outside the square. Sure the Queenstown 45 adventure race is a traditional \"first past the post is the winner\" type race but boy are we going to challenge and tempt you on the way !

Date: Easter Weekend, 6th –9th April 07. A long weekend without a lot else on in Queenstown, easy for competitors & support crews to get time off. Weather still mild, no ice / snow on the major passes in the area.

Race duration: 40 odd hours for the fastest teams, 54 hours for the slowest teams - all teams completing the same course. Registration Friday, 6th April 07, race start Saturday 7th April, prize giving dinner will be Monday evening 9th April.

Team composition: 2 (mixed or single sex) or 4 person teams (one of opposite sex). Separate Open & Corporate sections.

Disciplines: Mountain running/hiking, Mountain biking (note, ride-able courses a priority), kayaking (inflatable kayaks, paddles & buoyancy aids provided), rafting and navigation. Other disciplines will also be included from time to time as the course may require or to keep the race fresh.

Terrain/course guidelines: Low enough to avoid avalanche risk or the need to have ice axes and crampons, but high enough to be considered “high country”.
A key race strategy is to where possible use terrain that would otherwise be inaccessible to the public (i.e private land) and from time to time to include existing adventure activities as part of the race such as Via Ferrata.

Prizes

We will have a range of great prizes up for grabs, both merit prizes for the fastest teams as well as “Booty” prizes out on the course *.

Course Comments :

\"In High Performance Sport winning is everything - knowing you have done everything to perfection to be first across the line is the ultimate goal for every athlete or team. However when you throw in additional targets the challenge for victory becomes even harder. Racing off course to win targets within the race creates another unique dimension for the endurance athlete. The Queenstown 45 will generate inimitable challenges for everyone on the course. Winning is everything but winning more along the way will be the ultimate prize\"

Mark Elliott
World Champion and Olympic Triathlon Coach

\"One of the things I was always looking for was a good race with a new or different aspect. This race looks great! It\'s got some booty to go find out there on the course,... a nice mix of navigation, elements of spontaneity, and adventure skills.\"
