Length: 200 km
Location: Hanmer Springs, Canterbury, New Zealand
Set for the first time in the outdoor playground that is Hanmer Springs in Canterbury, the race promises adventure, challenge and camaraderie. Competitors will kayak, run and bike from 30 hours for the fastest, to 42 hours for the slowest. While there will be some rest at the end of each day with the support crews, sleep deprivation could still be a factor thrown in the mix.
The main category in this format, the four person team, should attract the main New Zealand adventure race players to compete for the hotly contested free spot to the next AR World Championship in Brazil, as well as established overseas teams. The winning four person team wins a free entry in the following AR World Championship.Adventure racing regulars and newcomers to the sport willing to try out longer races are expected to fill the two person category.
Based on the original Southern Traverse, the event will spread over 3 days, and will offer each night a camp site with support crews.
Day 1 - 0900 start. Estimated 8 hours of racing for fastest / 12hrs slowest
Day 2 - Midnight start. Estimated racing 15hrs fastest team / 24hrs slowest
Day 3 - 0600 start. Full 6hrs for all teams (rogaine / orienteering style)
