Length: 540 km
This extreme Arctic race is set to be a grueling challenge for those who want to push themselves to the limit both physically and mentally and join the elite few to become an Ultra Endurance Arctic Racer! In May 2011 the first ever Greenland Icecap Challenge will take place. This unique event is a 540km race where competitors will complete a full traverse of the icecap, a feat that is highly acclaimed among the world of polar explorers and adventurers. This first race will be record breaking because the winning female of the solo unsupported category will also become the first woman ever to complete a solo traverse of the icecap and the winning male in the solo unsupported catagory will become the first unassisted solo traverse in history (on foot).
Competitors will survive for between 18 – 27 days in one of the most inhospitable places in the world. Surviving in temperatures as low as -35°C (before wind chill), navigate, ski and pull pulks up to 75kg over the rugged terrain, maneuvre through dangerous crevasses, as well as watching out for polar bears on the East coast, in a race to be the first to cross the finish line. The route will follow an arc just above the Arctic Circle from the West to East coast and Greenland’s typically unpredictable weather is to be expected over the vast expanse of exposed wilderness as well as 24hr daylight. Competitors may be solo entrants or teams made up of two, three, or four participants and have the choice of racing supported or unsupported.
