Action Asia Challenge 2013 - Asia's premier 1 day Adventure Race since 1998

HELP CLEAN THE AIR & SEA - WE CAN'T RACE WITHOUT THEM
Distance: Approximately 38-43 km (Mountain biking approx 15 km, Ocean kayaking approx 7 km, Trail running approx 16 km, River rock scrambling approx 2 km with ropes remainder).
Course Map and Race Briefing: Will be disclosed at race briefing Fri night March 1st at Central, Hong Kong location (approx 7pm) to give all a fair chance. Course straight forward with easy navigation using main trails (unless you want to invent your own short-cuts). Start & finish area disclosed month before race, but can tell you it's on Lantau Island.
Entry limit: 100 teams - First come first serve upon payment - expected winning time 4 hours. Average team 7 hours. Cut-offs will be in place at various sections with a view of all teams finishing in 9 hour limit.
Race start time: 8am - Note 6:10am Cargo ferry leaves Central to Mui Wo - Can take bikes.
Equipment needed: See mandatory equipment list on top left as link of this page. All participants will need the basics like their own mountain bike, helmet, patch kit for the bike sections, climbing harness with slings, fig 8, carabiners for rope sections and abseil. You are strongly advised to train for this and must pass a mandatory equipment test the day before the race at the equipment check night before the race.
Bikes 26" or 29" wheels allowed.
Training: This is not a walk in the park, especially the rock scrambling sections so we encourage all to take their training seriously or you will face cut-offs in the race.
Hotel: Any hotel or hostel on Lantau Island will be convenient, but a South Lantau location will be faster to start/finish location.

*note if less than 3 teams in category by Feb 20th, then category will be combined with lower age category. Minimum age is 16, but must be with other person at least 20 to qualify for minimum age group of 36+.
Race Director & Course Designer:
Designed by Canadian born Michael Maddess who's organized over 120 events with Action Asia Events living in Hong Kong, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand for over 22 years and one of the most experienced Race Directors in Asia.
Michael Maddess an active trail runner and mtn biker, originally from North Vancouver has worked on 17 Action Asia Challenges across Asia, 2 Vietnam AA adventure races, 2 Himalayan Mtn Bike series, 22 Action SPRINT HK adventure races, 8 Action Asia Off Road HK races, 12 Kayak-n-run races, worked/competed in numerous other road races/triathlons including completing 3 Ironman triathlons, 1st runner-up in Hong Kong 100km Trailwalker in 11hrs 16 minutes 2012, 2nd runner-up 2x in 100km TW in 12hrs 44min, 12hrs 52min and 13 hrs 25 min, 1st place Wilson trail 78km 10hrs 16 min 2012, 1st place Wilson 78km 2011 10hr 52min, 2nd place Wilson 78km 2010 in 11 hrs 34 min, placed 8th overall in the Gobi 250km race with 5th fastest on the 80km day, 1st place Sabah 3 day team event 3x, coached dragonboat teams, baseball teams, referee soccer and climbed to 16,000ft in Bhutan, 15,000+ft Nepal Annapurna Base camp and jumps off bridges in Nepal for fun.
Technical Assistance:
HK experienced climbers and mountaineering professionals will all be involved in working on the technical rigging of the course insuring safety as the main priority.
Rope training
Many climbing walls around Asia where you can brush up on your rope skills. YMCA Kings Park and HK Mountaineering Training Centre for those in HK can arrange personal training. XHZ in Taiwan. Wilderness Associates in Singapore. Nomad in Malaysia.

One of the goals of the Action Asia Challenge is to raise charitable contributions for the Action Asia Foundation, an outdoor adventure-based charity which funds handicapped and underprivileged youth in Hong Kong and the Asian continent so they can also enjoy adventure activities like we do.
