MSOQ is a multi-sport adventure race, not an extreme race. For the fastest teams, stages will take between 1-10 hours to complete. The race course will be marked, but there will be orienteering elements incorporated into the course. Teams should be prepared to participate in a number of “surprise” Adventure Skills at times during the event. All teams will sleep in the hotel at night.



MSOQ requires fitness but, for the most part, does not require highly technical adventure or wilderness skills. To enable us to use the most spectacular terrain, athletes will be shuttled by bus/boat/train to and from start/finish areas on some days.



Race rules are finisher friendly. Rules are written and interpreted to allow teams to finish the race in an official or unofficial capacity.



The 2004 race will take place over five competition days. Stage one will be an enhanced prologue stage followed by stages two and three. Day four will see the introduction of a full rest-day for the first time. This will enable teams to recover, enjoy the incredible Five Star Nexus Resort & surrounding areas, and then prepare for the final two stages on days five and six. Teams should expect the MSOQ 2004 course to be about the same length and difficulty as MSOQ 2003 and 2002 (see MSOQ website for details – www.msoq.com, pictures from the 2003 race and the March 2004 course design trip). Similar to the last two years, a total winning time of 25-30 hours is expected. Teams should expect stages that include a climb up Mount Kinabalu, sea kayaking and swift water boat/raft segments. The use of traditional local craft is an MSOQ hallmark.
