Ah, winter…skiing, snowshoeing, hot chocolate, warm fires. It\'s great to be Canadian!
And what\'s more Canadian than the Winter Salomon Adventure Challenge! Teams of three tackle 35 kms of mountain biking, snowshoeing, xc skiing and, of course, tobogganing. All capped off with a classic Canadian winter party!
January 21 marks the launch of the 2006 Salomon Adventure Challenge series with a winter sprint adventure race at Mansfield Outdoor Centre, just one hour north of Toronto, presented by Frontier Adventure Racing Inc., Canada’s premiere adventure racing company, together with Salomon Canada.
“After the phenomenal success of the Salomon Adventure Challenge series the past few years, we are very excited to be bringing our classic winter event to Mansfield Outdoor Centre,†said Geoff Langford, president of Frontier Adventure Racing Inc (FAR Inc).
“The location is ideal, nestled among 3000 acres of wilderness, with all the amenities for competitors, and only an hour from Toronto.â€
FAR Inc is best known for its well-established Raid the North adventure races, classic wilderness events running 36 hours, for teams of four. The Salomon Adventure Challenge Series, a five to eight hour adventure race for teams of three, was introduced in 2001 as a fun and challenging way to try adventure racing. “Teams not only have to work together through a variety of winter sports,†said Langford, “but make navigation decisions along the way.â€
Organizers are expecting this race to be quite popular with a great new location, cheap accommodation/food packages, and for the first time ever - alicensed party with a band to cap off race day. It\'s a great deal with an entry fee of only $375. Registration is open at www.far.on.ca, and the response has been strong. Teams of three can be all-male, all-female, or coed, and all competitors must be at least 16 years of age.
“Our partnerships with all levels of adventure racing are very special for Salomon,†said Salomon Canada’s Sports Marketing Manager, Andrew Stewart. “We work with some of the best athletes in the world to make sure they get the top performance products they need to compete. At the same time, our goal is to get as many people as possible enjoying the adventure racing experience, and that’s where the Salomon Adventure Challenge fits in.â€
Frontier Adventure Racing will also be looking for local volunteers to assist in the management of this event. And although many volunteers travel from some distance to participate, organizers appreciate the opportunity to work with local volunteers who are familiar with the area. For more information about volunteering, please visit www.far.on.ca, or contact Frontier Adventure Racing Inc. at 416.783.4464 or volunteer@far.on.ca.
