The Speight\'s Coast to Coast is the longest running and biggest multisport event in New Zealand and the world. It involves 243km of road cycling, mountain running and kayaking form Kumara on the West Coast to Sumner on the East Coast.
The Speight\'s Coast to Coast takes place at the beginning of February every year.
It began in 1983 with 79 competitors and now has 1100 applicants for the 900 places each year. The event opens and closes on the same day in June each year, eight months before the event. The mailing list now stands at 9000 Kiwis and 1500 Internationals.
The event has been running for 22 years and there have been 63 television documentaries made of it.
These documentaries have been shown throughout the world and several countries have sent film crews to New Zealand to film the event including the BBC from England, Channel 9 from Australia, three competing channels from Germany, two from Japan as well as French, American and Welsh crews.
The Speight\'s Coast to Coast attracts competitors from all over the world each year and has been won 5 times by international competitors.
The race details are:
Two Day Event for individuals and two person teams;
Day 1 – 3km run, 55km road cycle, 33km mountain run, overnight stop at Klondyke Corner.
Day 2 – 15km road cycle, 67km white water kayak (grade 2), 70km road cycle.
One Day Event for individuals only.
3km run, 55km cycle, 33km mountain run, 15km cycle, 67km kayak, 70km cycle
Both races start at Kumara Beach on the Tasman Sea and finish at Sumner Beach on the Pacific Ocean. The two day event is for average athletes while the one day event is for expert athletes.
