Location: San Diego
Written to teach beginners how to navigate. But a challenge for all.
4-5 hour afternoon/evening race. NO entry fees, it’s FREE. Maybe we have to combine some teams, but we intend to have an experienced racer on each novice team to assist in pointing out what to look for on the map. They will teach you how to plot UTM’s, they will show you how to recognize peaks, valleys, mesa’s, steep terrain and gentle hills on the map. They may even get you lost – but it will all be fun. If we have enough mentors, then experienced racers are welcome to blast through this course if they can.
The pre-race will begin at NOON
Our meeting place is at Penasquitos Creek Park on the corner of Park Village Dr and Camino Del Sur (enter the address “12100 Darkwood Rd, San Diego, CA, 92129†in MapQuest to get directions. Darkwood is opposite the park, go to the next signal and turn left to get to the start). This is the same start location we used for a race in 2004 (not the same course however).
This race will involve bike (about 17 miles), and trekking (8 miles) and of course navigation. There is math involved, reading a compass and plotting UTMs as well as directional plotting.
Its about learning and having fun. The course has 2000 ft of elevation gain so its not flat. Maps will be provided. You need to bring bike, helmet and flashlight (as the trekking will likely be in the dark). Also bring water, food, a compass and a pen to write with. We always suggest you carry a first-aid kit.
