ROUTE DESCRIPTION -
Gorak Shep to Namche Bazaar - ( 30km - 3 to 6 hours) The race starts on a flat dry lake bed but the trail soon changes to a rocky and scree morrain. From Lobuche the terrain drops rapidly but the trail meanders through a large boulder field before flattening out along the valley floor into Periche. The route becomes dry and dusty on the way to Tengboche and after a knee buckling 600m descent competitors then have to endure the first major climb of the race of 350m upto Sarnassa. Its then a fairly flat run into Namche Bazaar.
Namche Bazaar to Lukla - (20km - 2 to 5 hours). The trail drops rapidly once leaving Namche descending through forest and leaving the Sagarmatha National park before passing through the villages of Jorsale and Monjo. From Phakding the terrain is undulating for the second half of the stage into Lukla where the bikes will be collected.
Lukla to Nunthala - (30km 40% rideable, 7 to 10 hours) The trail now becomes more undulating as it starts to cross valleys as opposed to following them. On the way to Nunthala competitors will ascend and descend over 2000m, dropping down to Jubhing at 1680m before climbing back to 2380m
Nunthala to Kinja - (26km 45% rideable, 9 to 12 hours). A very tough day with Taksindo La (3071m) followed by Lamjura La (3530m). Snow could also be encountered during this stage. By the end of the day competitors will have climbed an accumulative altitude of over 3500m so the final descent from Lamjura La to Nunthala at 1630m is a very welcome relief.
Kinja to Jiri - (47km 80% rideable, 6 to 9 hours). The 5km to Bhandar has an altitude gain of 500m and is only 25% rideable but from there a newly formed 4wd jeep track allows riders to compete the remaining 42km on the bikes making for a fast final stage into Jiri.
