Hello everyone.
Reference our initial e-mail 7/27/07 pasted below.
The San Diego (Rancho Penasquitos Open Space preserve) Mini A.R. course has been set and pre-run. If you are new to the sport this is the perfect way to get a taste of adventure racing. If you are an experienced racer this is a great opportunity to train and brush up on your skills. For those of you familiar with Penasquitos, don\'t worry as we will be taking you to some not so often traveled areas, including new areas that haven\'t been raced in previous PQ Minis put on by Barrie Adsett.
Disclaimer:
This is an unofficial training event, not a \"race\". There are no permits and no insurance for this event. There are no entry fees and no prizes. If any park ranger asks, we are just a bunch of people that decided to meet up to bike and run together. We have volunteered to set up a course for you and watch your equipment at the bike/trek TA while you are out there. There is always an inherent risk of injury when you trail run and mountain bike. It is your responsibility to \"race\" in a manner that is safe to you and others around you. Now on to the fun stuff!!!
Location:
Race start/finish is at Penasquitos Creek Park. It is located at the southeast corner of Park Village Road & Camino Ruiz in the Rancho Penasquitos community of the City of San Diego. If you enter that intersection information into Yahoo Maps or MapQuest you should receive directions to the race site. If you have trouble, let me know where you\'re coming from and I will send you personalized directions. There IS NO bathroom. Do what you have to do before you get there. There is also minimal available water at the race start (as in a small drinking fountain on the far side of the park).
Time:
The race will start at 11:00 A.M. Pre-race meeting and map handout will be held at 10:30. Maps are pre-plotted so you won\'t need any map plotting tools. We will be there starting at 10:00 or earlier, so if you are new (or newer) to adventure racing and have any questions come early.
Course Description:
We decided to set up a short and long course. The short course is perfect for the beginner or slower teams. The long course adds a few extra sections with extra climbing and tough navigation. Both include Trekking, Biking, and an Orienteering course. Once you leave the Start you will not return until the end of the race. That means be prepared to carry all your biking gear, trekking gear, and food/fluids with you for the whole race. All CPs are unmanned. There will be someone to watch your stuff at the bike/trek TA, but keep in mind that the TA is not at the start/finish. There will be a cutoff time at the bike/trek TA so we don\'t have to be out there all day. Course details will be covered at the pre-race meeting. Fastest time for the long course is expected around 3:30, but potentially longer due to navigation. Below are some statistics for the course (best case scenario)...
Short Course:
Trek/O-course - about 4mi, 500\' elevation (O-course, find 9 of 11 points)
Bike - about 13 mi, 700\' elevation
Long Course:
Trek/O-course - about 5mi, 500\' elevation (O-course, find all 11 points)
Bike - about 15 mi, 900\' elevation
Mandatory Gear:
It is your responsibility to bring whatever you feel is necessary; There will not be a gear check. Here is a list of highly recommended gear:
- Pen(s) to write down key words at CPs.
- Map case. Map paper is not waterproof.
- Compass
- Lots of fluids, enough for 4-6 hours of racing. You will need to carry it with you throughout the race. (One of us will be driving to the bike/trek TA. Should you wish to have some fluids transported there, label your jug/bottles/etc, and that will be there. Due to transport limitations, no coolers or such. Just bottles or milk sized jugs).
- Electrolytes - tablets or sports drinks.
- Food - enough for 4-6 hours of racing.
- Bike - helmet & gloves
- Bike repair kit
- Cell phone (for use in case of emergency)
RSVP:
Please RSVP by Sept 17 so we know how many maps/passports to print. You do not need to specify short or long course at this time, you can decide at the start. You do not need to specify number of team members either at this time. We just need to know how many teams. Each team will get 1 map & passport. In the unlikely event of heavy rain, the event will cancel as the preserve closes when it rains and is muddy due to environmental concerns.
We hope to see you out there. Keep an eye on SCARAB\'s. There will likely be one final e-mail 7-14 days pre-event.
We hope to see you out there -
Dave Krosch and Jake Bencke

Just a quick e-mail asking you to mark your calendars!
Jake Bencke and myself are putting on a \"Barrie Adsett\" style \"mini\" adventure race.
Date: Saturday, 9/22/07
Start Time: Noon.
Place: Rancho Penasquitos (San Diego) Open Space Preserve
Disciplines: Mtn Biking, Trekking/running, Maps/Compasses. No kayaking.
Cost: Free
There will be a \"Short\" and a \"Long\" course. The course and such is still in the final planning stages and we need to do a pre-run, but we expect the finish times to be in the range of 3-6 hours
It should be good preparation for the 10/20/07 Sierra Adventure Sports Laguna Mountains AR (minus the altitude). Jake\'s doing some design on that course as well. Maybe this Mini will give you some insight into Jake\'s planning/style.
We hope to see you out there. Keep an eye on SCARAB\'s. Additional e-mail will be forthcoming.
