The Alachua Sink Diet II begins at 0800 on Saturday, March 22, 2008 (regardless of the weather) at the City of Gainesville, Florida Kiwanis Challenge Playland (UTM NAD27 17R 369309E, 3284551N) with a three to four mile bike prologue.

When your team has successfully completed the prologue, you will receive instructions for a twenty-two to twenty-four mile bike segment (including a short trek loop) to the start the first trek segment.

After your team has successfully completed the eighteen to twenty mile trek segment, you will receive instructions for the paddle segment.

Once your team has successfully completed the fifty to fifty-five mile paddle segment, you will receive instructions for the second bike segment.

When your team has successfully completed the ninety to ninety-five mile bike segment, your team will receive instructions for an eighteen to twenty mile urban trek necessary to finish the diet at the City of Gainesville, Florida Kiwanis Challenge Playland.

Your team will have to solve riddles when traveling between segments and within segments. The location of each answer will be given in UTM coordinates, have an associated hint and usually involves locating a prominent landmark, topographical feature or unique object. Your team will have to plot UTM coordinates in the field.

Your team must complete each segment correctly and in its entirety before obtaining the instructions for the next segment. No penalties will be assessed for incorrectly solving or missing a riddle. To continue through the entire Alachua Sink Diet II, your team must improvise, adapt and overcome adversity, hardship as well as a variety of obstacles.

Each team will need a support crew(s) whose principal purpose is to transport your team’s equipment, gear, maps, tools, devices, food and water to the various transition areas and rest stops along the Alachua Sink Diet II course.

Support crews may assist their team at any of the transition areas as well as a single rest stop (during the second bike segment). Support crew(s) will receive instructions to intercept their team after the prologue begins. Support crew(s) are encouraged to help their team in any manner at the locations listed. However, support crew(s) are discouraged from helping their team during travel between segments or within segments.

Most of the roads used during the Alachua Sink Diet II have bike lanes or are lightly traveled by motorized vehicles. The paddle section of the diet may be through areas of heavy vegetation that may have low or no water. Be prepared to portage and/or bushwhack portions of the paddle segment. There will be a zip line (~100 foot) that your team can utilize during the second bike segment which will require that each team carry a single climbing harness, three or four carabiners as well as two or three slings or Prusik cords.

Use of electronic communication and navigation devices during the diet is permitted. Teams are responsible for providing their own maps and they should include the area: UTM NAD27 17R 368000-396000E, 3254000-3288000N.

Other than the instructions, your team is responsible for every aspect and everything necessary to complete the Alachua Sink Diet II. However, if you find someone that needs help, lend a hand.
