Goldrush: The toughest 3 day Multisport Event in NZ raced in the picturesque backdrop of Central Otago.
Day 1 captures all the reasons why Goldrush is so popular, racing on the mighty Clutha River, mountain biking in some of the best back country trails gaining 2000 vertical feet and back down again and the magical run through to the Upper Manorburn Dam, 2,500ft above sea level where we set up camp for the night.
Day 2 with its 2 great mountain bike rides, a flat sprint for 26km on your road bike and a fantastic run through the secluded Poolburn Gorge on the Otago Central Railtrail, over viaducts and passing through tunnels, what more could you want. Don’t be fooled by the stunning scenery, this is one hard race day and the last mountain bike ride has taken its toll over the years. Camping out in the Upper Clutha Valley, catered for by the local community all contributes to making Tarras a very popular overnight camping spot.
Day 3 gets you away at 7.30 on your road bike to bike through to Albertown, just south of Wanaka where you once again get into your kayak and paddle the upper reaches of the Clutha River, a grade 2 paddle with some swirly, gnarly rapids to greet you here. Transition to road bike for a fast (normally tail wind) ride on the main highway through the Cromwell Gorge to the run transition for the final leg along the Otago Centennial Trail following the Clutha River back to Alexandra and the finish in Molyneux park

Goldrush has been fortunate over the years to have most of the top Multisport athletes compete with Mark Elliott being the first individual Goldrush winner, and John Knights from Queenstown, Hayden Key, Steve Gurney, Tim Pearson, Dougal Allan amongst others having also taken out the spoils over the years
Goldrush is an tough individual race for any athlete, the heat, hills and distances can be demanding for the individual, as a 2 person team the event still provides the challenge that we all look for in an event but the 3 person team option makes it achievable for your average weekend warrior that still wants to pit themselves against others in a race environment, but maybe does not want to commit to the type of training that the top guys and girls do. Check out the Goldrush website for a suggested training program. www.goldrush.co.nz
