iRule rule Stage 1
Lisa de Speville / 28.10.2004

The all-male Kiwi team iRule dominated Stage 1 from the start to claim overall honours, and the US$2500.00 Stage 1 prize.Stage 1 was almost a race prologue format with 3 x 4km courses. Each course incorporated identical 1km paddle, 1km beach run and 2km mountain bike sections, combined in a different sequence for each sprint. During sprint 1 and 3 they also had to walk over a cargo-net, elevated about 0.6m above the ground by inflated rubber tubes and in every stage each team had to get their racers over the 9-foot wall. A tough obstacle by any standard, the activity brought about much pushing, leaping and hauling.
Starting Stage 1 with a 0.1km wade/swim, the teams kayaked, ran and biked to the finish. Crossing the line iRule had a 1-minute lead with Nokia and Seagate NZ tied for 2nd.
According to the rules of this stage, the second sprint would be started 20-minutes after the first team had completed the first sprint and any team still out would essentially just continue. Fortunately all teams were in within the 20-minute period to cool-down and re-hydrate.
