19-year-old Benju Patterson was a mere 11 seconds behind McKinstry after the first day, and emerged as the winner after catching him midway through the final 70km bike into Christchurch.

He started seven minutes behind the Christchurch dentist in the wave start system from Klondyke Corner this morning and did not see the leader until his bunch caught him on the outskirts of Christchurch in the final bike ride from the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge.

It is just his second time at the Speight\'s Coast to Coast after finishing sixth last year.

\"I had absolutely no idea where I was today. I never saw Steven on the paddle and had no idea where he was. But I got into a good bunch on the cycle and we caught him about 40kms from the finish,\" Patterson said. \"I knew I just had to stick with him. I am absolutely stoked. It was a fantastic race and Steven really had a good race too.\"
