CARE Adventure Race
Neil Munro (CARE International) / 18.04.2006

Swinley Forest, Bracknell played host to the third CARE Challenge Adventure Race at the start of April. The race was for teams of 2, 3 or 4 people started at 9.00am on Saturday morning from The Look Out. It was split into two parts and began with a 2- hour walking/running orienteering route around the forest. Stage two was a cycle orienteering route, again around Swinley Forest. During each stage of the race participants were challenged to find as many control points as possible with a mystery team challenge added to the mountain bike section.
Twenty teams participated on the day with a wide range of experience in adventure racing present on the event. The teams were broken down into three categories which related to the number of competitors in each team, this allowed all of the teams a fair chance of winning a prize. There were early leaders in each of the three sections after the running section of the event with ‘ Girls on top ‘, ‘ Barclays Asset Team 2 ‘ and ‘ Sister act ’ all showing both the ability to find the orienteering points and incurring very few time penalties for returning late. Team ‘Sister Act‘deserve get a special mention for clearing the whole course on the running section of the event.
The mountain biking section saw the leading team in each category cement their hold on their titles by either doing just enough or winning the section outright. During the mountain biking section teams also had to complete a mystery activity which related directly to CARE and the countries that the organisation works in. As well as testing competitors hand eye co-ordination and knowledge of geography it also highlighted to teams the many countries that CARE works in around the world.
In the overall standings there was an outright winner who managed to get the highest score of any team during both sections of the event. Team ‘Sister Act’ paved the way with a very impressive total of 377 points, with ‘Syngenta Team 1’ coming a close second with 323 points and ‘Girls on Top’ coming in third with 289 points.
