The Wilderness ARC
They're Off
Rob Howard / 29.05.2006

The 2006 Wilderness ARC is underway. Teams assembled on Fort William High Street ready for the 08.00 start after a fine night and fresh snow on the hills. The teams on the event camp site had a clear view of Ben Nevis and woke to see the top covered in fresh snow. Paul Mahon of Superfeet said, “I saw it and I just wanted to get going … but thought I’d better save my energy!
For some teams it had been a late night as they were caught out by the amount of time preparing for a big race takes. At midnight Spartans and Spirit of Adventure were still marking and cutting their many maps, and Cotswoldoutdoor.com had just finished laminating theirs.
Iain Carroll of Cornish Pasty only arrived at 11.40 after a mammoth journey from Penzance in Cornwall. He only knew he was racing 3 days ago … at which point he was in Nicaragua!
But, after all the preparations, it was finally time to go. Teams shook hands, hugged, had a last check of their rucksack straps and set off with a cheer as Race Director Phil Humphreys shouted Go!
Then they made their way up out of town to Cow Hill for the first orienteering stage which will spread out the teams a little, before the canyon and ropes activity in Glen Nevis.See All Event Posts
