The Wilderness ARC
Super Tuesday
Rob Howard / 30.05.2006

As Tuesday drew to a close all the teams were still in the race, with two unranked. Aberdeen Asset Management continued to dominate the race and the weather was sunny with superb visibility of the hills, lochs and islands. Yet, despite the sunshine the air remained bitterly cold – more like March than the end of May.The long trek over the Morvern hills, which the leaders completed last night, occupied most of the teams through the day. At one point the ‘penalty tent’ set up at CP12 was overwhelmed, with 5 teams there at once, but luckily it was sunny and they could sleep outside, cuddling down out of the wind.
Spirit of Adventure were unable to get that far. They were getting more and more tired, and eventually decided they could not continue so they were lifted from the course by car and taken to Transition 4. Hopefully, they can rest and continue from there.
Those who got through the trek and began the bike ride around the coast during daylight were rewarded with crystal clear views of a magnificent, but little visited part of Scotland. Few people, if any, will have completed that coastal ride, and it was a perfect day to enjoy it.
Aberdeen Asset Management certainly did, but unfortunately they made a mistake by not following the route described, and were penalised half an hour to be served at CP22. It was simple mistake, taking a path past a large estate house, instead of around it. However, the house belongs to a major land owner who had given permission for access to large parts of the course and stipulated that the path past the house should not be used.
As they arrived at CP5 the team were blissfully unaware of this and, as the sun was shining, they slept outside for 30 minutes before starting the paddle. Their speed has counted against them in one way, on the first paddle they caught the worst of the tidal conditions ... and it was the same on Loch Sunnart. See All Event Posts
