The Wilderness ARC
Parallel Roads to the Finish
Rob Howard / 02.06.2006

The last few teams are now on the final stage of the race aiming to meet tomorrow morning’s 08.00 course closure time. They have a long trek ahead of them and one last, tough night out on the course.Their penultimate stage was the bike ride along Glen Roy, famous for its parallel roads. These are three lines running the length of the valley, and though they look like roads or tracks they were left by retreating glaciers. They are a remarkable sight, but the teams will remember the glen for other reasons.
Most will remember the steep hike-a-bike into the valley and Jonathan Mayne of Dynamic Adventure Racing was complaining he’d paid his entry money for 180km of mountain biking, but had pushed his bike for most of it! (He was suffering from selective memory at the time.)
His team were busy packing for their trek, and although there were several teams close behind them and their only objective was to finish by 08.00. “We have over 16 hours to the closing time, said Piers Constable, “and it looks fantastic up there, so we are going to enjoy this last walk and the finish!
North Downs Mountain Rescue were the next team in and they will remember Glen Roy for the difficult bike ride they endured. Their problems began the previous night, riding into transition 8 when Shona Robertson’s steering headset locked and she crashed. “I was going downhill, she said, “so unfortunately was travelling at some speed and had some grazes and cuts down one side.See All Event Posts
