The Warrumbungles are abuzz

There's a buzz in the Warrumbungles. The gum trees are heavily in bloom and the bees are feasting. The flies aren't as bad as during our previous visits here but they're busy enough to annoy. And about 200 expectant rogainers have arrived. They've set up accommodation, some have registered at admin, asking questions about map design, true north versus magnetic, the heat, trying on the natty event clothing, checking out the amenities.

It's about 19 hours before the noon start tomorrow but you can feel the apprehension, preparation and expectation; people thinking about food, fitness, opposition, water supplies - it's hot, so water will be a major factor.

Several top teams are here already. Previous World Rogaining winners David Rowlands and Greg Barbour arrived about noon. Julie Quinn, David Baldwin and some other Canberra stars have been sighted.

The shadows are lengthening and the international flags barely fluttering in the gentle wind, but the day has been hot, about 30 degrees C, and the wind was hot and dessicating from the north. It will be hotter tomorrow so competitors will need a method to cope with the afternoon, to get into the cooler night with necessary energy and hydration. Course setters will have a major task in maintaining water supplies on the course. The night will be cool, below 10 degrees C, which will be much more suitable for high energy activities.

Given the dramatic skyline of the Warrumbungles we can assume there are plenty of climbs to be had out there. The peaks are remnants of volcanic intrusions and flows, hence there are vertical rock features like the Breadknife and Belougery Spire looking down on our campsite.

The camping area used to be an old farm, taken over by National Parks about 30 years ago. It now has comfortable amenities, including hot showers, and plenty of space to spread out. We're based in the Education Centre, a lot like a small country school-room, including power and internet. Around is a tent city, with admin tents, catering marquee, clothing outlet, plus the swelling number of competitor tents.

Let's get on with it!
