World Rogaining Champs
The World Champs are Go!
Julian Ledger / 13.10.2006

It's hot here and after 3 hours teams will be hittting their water supplies hard. A number of course marshals are out monitoring progress and in particular keeping an eye out to ensure that teams are staying together. Water supplies will all be checked as the afternoon progresses. At the start, strong wind gusts created a challenge for the traditional 'clothes line' start with control cards blowing off the line. As an alternative volunteers stood each with 20 control cards and handed them out with 5 minutes to go. That worked well enough and after last messages from course setter Mike Hotchkis the start went off smoothly at 12.00.
It looked to me as if about 2/5 of the competitors headed north, 2/5 west and 1/5 west or south west. I drove out to the road to take photographs and watched teams streaming across the road and up the small hill to 22 and also along the gully to 52.
The admin crew have had a breather and are now consolidating their records and setting up the computers ready for tomorrow. This World Championships is the first to use the Navlight electronic punch system which has been readily accepted by competitors. It is being used in conjunction with the regular control cards.See All Event Posts
