Tricks start early for the Howl at the Moon

Tricks started early for some teams during the race this year. With the race start at 1500 EST, teams were to follow Race Director Gomez out of Stephen Foster Culture Center to a trial head in the town of White Springs, FL. However, some teams misunderstood the direction of being able to do route choosing. They zigged instead of zagging and found themselves 10 minutes behind the leaders at the very start.

Navigation errors have already taken a toll a teams along with gear malfunctions to force some teams futher back in the pack then they had hoped. After the initial trail run teams transitioned to their bikes and rode the trails and road for this area to the canoe put-in. The start of the canoe section will be upstream to a check point before turning around and going with the flow of the river. At the end of the canoe section teams will transition back to their bikes for the last section of the race. Did I mention that teams are carrying their bikes along with them in the canoes. At least if the river is too low they can suspend the canoe between the bikes and push along until deeper water appears.

The first teams are expected to cross the finish line sometime near 0400EST with teams having until 0900EST to remain ranked in the race. Check back for more news from the race and final results.See All Event Posts
