Howl at the Moon
Final Thoughts from the Howl at the Moon
Greg Yetter / 03.11.2006

This year’s Howl at the Moon is over and the racers can now enjoy a brief rest until the next race. Over 30 teams lined up for the start of the race in the beautiful Stephen Foster Park Culture Center in White Springs, FL. Teams ranged from soloist, both male and female, to 4 person co-ed set to take on the course. The weather cooperated for the race, a clear night even if a bit on the cold side (at least it was not raining).Racers were led out of Stephen Foster Park Culture Center by Gomez to a trail head about 1 mile away. It was during this initial run that some teams having misunderstood the pre-race briefing took a wrong turn adding a little more distance to their race. Racers began with a run utilizing the Florida Trail and the numerous off road tracks in the back country. Navigation errors began to take their toll during run adding more time and distance to some of the teams.
After the run racers transitioned to their bikes for a ride, for more than 10 teams this started their time in the dark. Since black powder hunting season had begun racers were aware that vehicles could be encountered in even the most remote areas. Spot on navigation was even more important after dark as there was little light from the moon and all roads look the same at 0100.
