Rob Howard / 18.05.2006

Gael Force West will combine the new international race with an adventure festival and a 6 hour challenge event, as well as giving visitors a unique opportunity to extend their stay and explore the delights of the West of Ireland.
The steep mountains, island studded bays, lakes, rivers and quiet country lanes are a dream setting for an adventure race. It’s a landscape that holds an irresistible appeal for visitors from around the world and the course will allow teams to experience the natural wonders of the West Coast on a journey steeped in Gaelic culture and legend.
Irish hospitality is also legendary, and Gael Force West will be more than just a race, it will be a festival of adventure a 4 day long race party! And for those who want to make the most of their visit and plan travel activities around the race, Ireland West Tourism will be offering personal advice and arranging travel packages, including transfers from several nearby international airports.
‘Adventure Base’ for Gael Force West will be in the heritage town of Westport, which is situated below the pilgrimage mountain of Croagh Patrick and overlooks the clear tidal waters and shifting sands of Clew Bay. Both races will start and finish in the town, which will host the adventure festival.
Gael Force 12 will see mixed teams of four embarking on an expedition-style course including gruelling 12-hour stages covering 250km over 72 hours. Disciplines will include mountain biking, mountain climbing, abseiling, canoeing and navigation ...and sleep will be optional!
