CARA Hiring
Chris Koch / 01.09.2006

Simon was the original push behind CARA and has thrown his focus behind seeing the organization come to fruition. He has seen the organization rise to gain its own momentum to the point where it can now work for the sport in Canada. One of Simon\'s greatest strengths was his ability to bring the right people in to the organization and to listen to the concerns of others and adopt to meet those concerns.
In the words of Simon
CARA began as an ambitious dream nearly 4 years ago. There were signs at that time that the sport would soon be facing some lean years, and that it was time for racers and race directors to unite under one flag. That flag was CARA. It has not been an easy road, but along the way some amazing things happened. Opponents became supporters, naysayers became believers, and most importantly,
the Association gathered enough support to begin to make a noticeable difference.
I\'m very proud of what CARA has accomplished during its existence.
• The safety guidelines and environmental charter both represent huge contributions of time from many individuals and industry and government experts. They also represent a major step forward in ensuring the safety of competitors across the
country, as well as ensuring that we leave the forests and fields in the same way that we found them.
• CARA has also successfully negotiated a nation-wide insurance policy for sanctioned CARA events. This represents a major savings for race directors who traditionally had to search abroad for reasonable insurance rates.
• CARA has been able to support race directors by assisting with costs of tradeshows and race director meetings. This has come through the generous support of sponsors, but also significant financial assistance from government programs which fund non-profit organizations (i.e. Trillium Foundation).
• CARA has received the support from virtually all adventure racing companies in Canada during 2006.
• NARC has been a significant achievement for CARA and for the sport in Canada, as it attracted significant media. Stay tuned for the 2007 NARC announcement this fall.
• CARA has worked hard to grow its membership base by delivering good value to its members with weekly updates, quarterly newsletters, discounts at CARA partners, and a subscription to explore magazine.
The list is long, and I chose to highlight only a few of my favorite achievements.
SleepMonsters wishes Simon all the best for his upcoming marriage and the defense of his PhD.
In the meantime, CARA has collected resumes from numerous candidates and is in the process of selecting Simon\'s replacement. For clarification, CARA is formed from a voluntary Board of Directors which in turns hires an Executive Director.
SleepMonsters will announce the successful candidate when the result becomes public.
