The 2nd GORE-TEX Transalpine Run a Runaway Success

News Release / 02.10.2006
The gruelling eight-stage GORE-TEX® Transalpine Run (2-9 September 2006) was won by team, Triathlon Trentino, for the second year running.

116 teams took part in the Run across the Alps; from its start in Oberstdorf, Germany, the route led runners through Austria and Switzerland to the finish line at Latsch in South Tyrol, Italy.

Ettore Girardi and Silvano Fedel of team Triathlon Trentino from Italy won the title in the men’s division. Victory in the masters’ division went to Dr. Thomas Miksch (GER) and Christian Stork (GER). The winners in the mixed division were Magdalena Schiffer (AUT) and Markus Friedl (AUT) and the winners of the women’s division were Irene Senfter (ITA) and Annemarie Gross (ITA).

Triathlon Trentino completed the Run in an amazing 25 hours and 35 minutes, which is an incredible achievement, especially when one considers that the athletes ran large parts of the race at high altitudes above the tree line crossing several different mountain ranges.

The highest point and concurrently the highlight of the Run was Mount Rappenscharte in the Ötztal Alps, which rises to a height of 3,212 metres. The contrasting snowfields and gravel at high altitude with muddy trails and rushing mountain streams at the lower elevations made for a gruelling stage both physically and under foot.
