Kicking Starting a Multisport Summer in New Zealand

Michael Jaques / 12.10.2006
Multisport enthusiasts will kick-start their summer this weekend when almost 400 endurance athletes line up for the annual Multisport Team Challenge on Saturday Oct. 14th in New Zealand

This unique event has become one of the Wellington\'s favourite ways to kick-start the summer. The kayak, mountain bike, road cycle and run event is New Zealand’s only dedicated multisport team event and attracts elite and recreational athletes alike, all looking to dust off the winter blues and get ready for the season ahead.

A record field of 380 athletes in 100 teams will line up on the Days Bay start line. As part of the New Zealand Business Games that have been running for the past week, the Multisport Team Challenge attracts a big corporate entry, but is also open to all comers. Teams are made up of two or four people, or a non-kayaking three-person option. Categories include Open and Business House.

Running now for almost 8 years, the wide range of participants – from Coast to Coast champions like Jill Westenra to lunchtime runners and first time kayakers – attests to its success. Teams range from the NZ Royal Ballet Company to government departments, Wellington City Council, corporates, chartered accountants, legal firms, schools and families.
