Stephen Pyke and Emma Hargrave win Montrail Ultrarun Champs

At a packed awards ceremony last Sunday, Stephen Pyke and Emma Hargrave were confirmed as the overall male and female winners of the inaugural Ultra-running Championships.

With Montrail as title sponsors and supported by planetFear, the championships brought together 12 of the best off-road endurance races around the UK into a single series. From a fast 30 miles in Sussex, through the ultra-rough 42 miles of Galloway’s “Rings of Fire” to the classic 61 miles of the Fellsman in the Yorkshire Dales, the series provided a challenge for everyone.

Stephen Pyke scored 3997 points from a possible 4000 and won 3 of the 12 races outright in becoming overall male champion. Emma Hargrave waited until the very final race of the series, the 50 mile Long Mynd in Shropshire to secure her title. Both win £500 and get to keep the handsome perpetual trophy for the coming year. Team Montrail/Lowe Alpine were overall male team winners.

The championships has been formed with the intention of securing the future of some of the best ultra-distance races in the UK and making the rapidly growing sport of Ultra-running more accessible. Over the series a total prize fund of over £7000 was awarded to race winners, spot prize winnersand series winners.

For 2007 the championships will continue to welcome Montrail as title sponsor and will be presented in association with Thorlo, Clif-Bar and planetFear. All are companies with great product and a real commitment to investing in the grass roots of the sport.
