A Free Breakfast on TNF – There’s Just One Catch ...

You have to survive the first ever The North Face Winter XX race on the first weekend in December. After twenty hours of non-stop racing, much of it in the dark, the sponsors think you’ll deserve a free festive fill up from Wilf’s Café.

“It won’t just be a mince pie either,” said Marketing Director Keith Byrne, “but there might be a mince pie included as it will be a special menu.” Prompted to make it an ‘all you can eat’ breakfast he responded with an emphatic, “No! I know how much adventure racers can eat!”

Byrne will be racing with a TNF team which is already committed to an extensive international race programme next year, including the European and possibly the World Championships. They are hoping to end 2003 at the XX on a high after their squad claimed the coveted ACE Races team title and won both Adrenalin Rush and the 4 Winds USA Supreme.

They may also be warming up and getting used to the format in preparation for the second XX next February, which is going to be the first points scoring race in the 2004 British Championships. (More news on that to come soon.) That race may also have one of the world’s best known teams taking part - ‘The Terminators’ from France, the mighty Team Spie, who are now sponsored by TNF.

Phil Humphreys has been dropping a few hints about the new race format, and it’s always wise to listen to what he has to say! The winter weather and darkness are obviously going to be challenging, but he’s also promised to throw in some “knee trembling” special activities, and said he won’t be using the inflatable Sevylor canoes.
