Highland Mountain Marathon Launched
Rob Howard / 18.12.2006

It will use the traditional mountain marathon format over two days, with teams of two navigating over mountainous terrain and carrying all their equipment for the overnight camp.
However, to make the event that bit more social food will be available at the midway camp and this will also ease the weight burden of teams carrying much more gear than they are used to in a MM. Some “traditional Highland entertainment†is also promised at the camp ... a promise/threat of bagpipes perhaps?
There will be 5 classes to choose from; A, B, C, D and Score and the planners include Alec Keith, one of this year’s LAMM elite winners. LAMM organiser Martin Stone has advised on the planning and the event will use Sportident timing.
The team behind the Highlander are Alasdair Lawton, Katy Boocock and Henry Blake, who have years of experience between them as mountaineers, competitors and event organisers. They also run the Strathpuffer 24hr Mtb race and promise “an intimate knowledge of the event location†... which might give a hint as to where it is.
The exact location will be published on the event website on March 17th, and is described as follows: The marathon will take place this year within 1 hour's travel of Inverness and 4 hours' travel from Edinburgh and Glasgow, in a remote and mountainous area where the bulk of the ground is rough hill ground and moorland with some intricate contour detail. In view of the time of year however, the courses will avoid the highest summits and competitors are unlikely to find themselves exceeding a height of 700 metres.â€
The entry fee is £45 per person and entries open on March 30th, although the entry form is already available.
