Taking it to the Extreme
26.07.2007

The 29 year old Teacher met SAS legend and current best-selling author Chris Ryan at an outdoor army training centre in Dorking and was then put through his paces on a specially designed, timed assault course.
Allister fought his way around the five kilometre long course where he had to wade through a freezing river complete with challenging obstacles, tackle a military grade assault course and finally complete a three kilometre cross country run through boggy fields in the hope of getting to the end in the fastest time. As well as his physical strength, Allister’s mental ability under pressure was also tested with some demanding MENSA style questions at a series of checkpoints along the way.
Allister commented, “ The day was exhausting but extremely fun and meeting Chris Ryan was incredible. He has been in some very tough situations so it was great to have him encouraging us along the course. This was definitely one of the best days out I’ve had in a long time.â€
The event, organised by Sure For Men, was held to find a team of men who would be tough enough to compete for their country in the Sure Extreme Pamplona adventure race in Spain this July, with local lad Allister making the grade.
Team Great Britain leader Chris Ryan said, “It was a really tough course and I certainly can’t fault Allister for effort. I told the guys from the start not to waste my time and to give their all. Allister responded fantastically and really did himself and the people of Bath proud by making the team.â€
The full UK team for the challenge are: Allister Sheffield (Bath), James Duncan (Guilford), Mike Bartholomew (Leicester), Mike Beadle (Hull), Tim O'Brien (London) and Trevor Misson (Hull). (Trevor was one of the SleepMonsters members who responded to this challenge on our newsletter.)
