- competition as individuals or as teams of 2, 3 or 4
This year, American adventure racer Kyle Peter decided to make his triathlon debut here, racing as an individual, and he sends us this exclusive report.
Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon is about strategy, and the race favors relay teams and individuals who can work, race and play together the best - not necessarily the fittest athletes. Competitors race over a short course triathlon (0.5 mile swim - 9 mile bike - 3 mile run). Athletes do not have to stay in swim - bike - run order after lap one. Teams and solos \"bank\" as many legs in each discipline as desired, keeping in mind that the ultimate goal is to \"complete\" the most \"triathlons.\"
I decided to register for this Ian Adamson Event due to its unique format. I thought that my adventure racing background would fare well for me even though this was my first triathlon. Before the race I figured that I could complete 16 full triathlons in the 24 hours. This estimate all hinged on the assumption that I could physically swim 8 miles from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm - no night swimming - something I had never done before. (My previous open water swim experience consisted of ten minute stints in the local reservoir.)
