Finally... our very own national running mag!

Jacqueline Windh / 19.02.2008
Finally... our very own national running mag! The first edition of Canadian Running Magazine will be launched this week. SleepMonsters had a chance to talk to founding editor Michal Kapral – who runs a sub-3 hour marathon while juggling! – about this venture.

What’s your interest in running - are you a runner yourself?
I\'ve been running competitively for about 10 years, mostly on the road, but some track and cross-country as well. To keep things interesting, I also have a hobby of setting Guinness World Records. In 2004, I set the world record for the fastest marathon pushing a baby in a stroller (2:49:43) - which has since been broken - and I\'m the current record holder for the fastest 10K and fastest marathon while juggling three objects (36:22 and 2:50:09, respectively). Since I started \"joggling,\" I\'ve become addicted to juggling - I can do seven balls for about seven seconds.

This year, my running goals include adventure racing, trail running and ultras. After reading about Dean Karnazes ordering pizzas and burritos during his long runs, I decided that ultra running was my kind of sport.

What inspired you to start this magazine?
The publishers at Gripped Inc. [publishers of Gripped magazine and Triathlon Magazine Canada] saw an opportunity to fill a big void by producing a high-quality, national running magazine. There are about a million runners in Canada, and until now, the only running magazines on the market were American.

What will be different about it from other magazines that are already on the market here in Canada?
Everything in it is geared toward Canadians. We feature Canadian runners, races, trails and club profiles. We even talk to Canadian scientists for our training research articles. Our winter running tips are for real Canadian winters, and gear reviews cover Canadian products in Canadian dollars. Did I say the word Canadian enough there?

Will it focus on road-running, or will you also cover trail-running?? What about adventure races?
The main focus is on road running, but we\'ll have a regular trail-running section and some articles on adventure races as well. I\'m doing the three-day event at the Rock and Ice Ultra in the Northwest Territories next month and will be writing a feature about the experience (assuming I survive).

So, how do we find this new magazine?
Canadian Running Magazine is published six times a year. It\'s available at Shoppers Drug Mart, The Running Room, Chapters/Indigo, Canadian airports and many specialty running stores. Subscriptions for one year are only $17.95 (call 416-927-0774 or visit www.runningmagazine.ca). The first issue hits the stands on February 21 in Ontario, and across the country on February 26.
