Ã…re Extreme Challenge - Nordic Championships in Adventure Racing set for June 27th 2009

Magnus Ã…kerblad - Head of competition / 22.08.2008
We welcome you to Ã…re, Sweden on the 27th of June 2009 for the 13th edition of Ã…re Extreme Challenge - Nordic Championships in Adventure racing for solo-competitors. In 2008, New Zealand's Richard Ussher won mens Solo with a new course record 4:41:12, and Sweden's Viktoria Wallin won the ladies Solo for the second time on 5:35:27.

The disciplines are:
Kayaking 25 km in rivers and on lakes.
Trail-running 15 km over "Ã…reskutan" (almost 1000 vertical meters up)
Mountainbike 35 km from Huså through the forest back to Åre.

You can compete in Solo, Duo-teams or relay teams with three competitors, where you do one part of the race each.

There will be prize money in the Solo group, and we will raffle off a table with an enormous amount of nice prizes among all competitors.

The week before Ã…re Extreme Challenge we will arrange some smaller and shorter races in mountainbike, hill-sprint and kayaking. There will also be a special day for the kids on the 26th of June, when they can compete in "Mini-Ã…re Extreme Challenge".

In the middle of Sweden, 400 meters above sea level you will find Ã…re, a small village with the biggest ski area in northern Europe. Ã…re is situated in a valley at the shore of the "Ã…re-lake" and with mountains in south and north. The highest mountain is "Ã…reskutan" with a mountain-peak at 1420 meters above sea level. In 2007 the Alpine World Ski Championships was arranged in Ã…re. During the last years Ã…re has become one of the biggest areas for downhill biking in Europe, during the summer. During your visit in Ã…re you can also enjoy beautiful hiking, fishing in lakes and rivers, rafting, golf and downhill biking etc.

It is easy to travel to Ã…re, and you can choose between taking the train, flying or travel by car. If you travel from Stockholm in Sweden the train is about 6 hours, or the flight 1 hour. It is about 650 km from Stockholm to Ã…re. If you have any questions about the best way for you to travel to Ã…re, just contact us and we will help you out.

As Ã…re is a big ski area during the winter, it is easy to find accommodation during the summer. Skistar is the company that runs the ski area during the winter and the bike park during summer. They also offer accommodation worth its price in small apartments and cabins. Holiday Club is a nice hotel right at the beach, they also offer nice prices during the summer. Have a look at the tourist information home page.

2008 winner Richard Ussher says:
All in all it was a fantastic race, superbly organized and I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many Suunto watches and flash looking cell phones given away as prizes in my life. Åre was a fantastic little town, and everyone from the race crew to the locals I met made my stay a memorable one. if you’re ever looking for a challenge in Sweden then mark this one in.
