With two events so far, one in blizzards and the other in a heat wave, the 2004 British Adventure Racing Championships (BARC) has been well supported. The next round, The Rat Race in Edinburgh, will be the UK’s first urban race and is eagerly anticipated, as is the ever popular Saab Salomon UK X-adventure, which will be held in September.

However, as a result of the difficulties Adventure Sports One have had securing insurance two of the remaining events will not now be able to take place. Both the X-Terminator, which was to be held in Ireland, and the Terminator X2, which was the final race in the series, can not now take place.

Brian Elliott, the owner of Adventure Sports One, commented. “Everyone involved in the races; competitors, marshals and our organising team, are desperately disappointed, but with no insurance cover we have to call these races off. By doing so now there is time to reorganise the latter part of the championships and for teams to make their plans accordingly.”

Elliott has been the driving force behind the British Adventure Racing Championships and staged two memorable series finals in North Wales, and he is confident the championship format he successfully introduced will now continue.

“BARC has brought a new and valuable national dimension to UK adventure racing,” he said. “It’s now well established and has the full support of the other Race Directors in the series and of the teams taking part. The line up of races may be changing slightly, but everything else remains the same, and the champions will be worthy winners over a varied and professionally organised series. BARC will continue to go from strength to strength.”
