Desert Winds - needs your help!

Press Release / 05.02.2010
Whether you have experience working on an adventure race or not, we can always find a place for you to enjoy the event while participating in making it happen. If you enjoy camping, endurance sports, and good company, then volunteer for the Desert Winds Expedition Race.

The Desert Winds Adventure Series has been providing quality adventure races for teams from all over the United States since 2007. This year, The Desert Winds will be producing its first expedition length race September 18th – 25th 2010 in the Mojave Desert just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. This 310 mile (or 500km) race will consist of trekking, mountain biking, rappelling, desert navigation, paddling, and surprises throughout the incredible terrain.

Volunteers who would like to work on an expedition length race can sign up by emailing Corey Rosen at coreyrosen@yahoo.com or going to www.desertwindsexpeditionrace.com. Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

Checkpoint Crew – No experience necessary
Checkpoint Captain – Volunteered on at least one expedition race
Transition Area Crew – No experience necessary
Transition Area Captain – Volunteered on at least one expedition race
Headquarters Crew – No experience necessary
Media Crew – Experienced photographers, videographers, writers, or editors needed
Media Assistants – No experience necessary
Medical Crew – Experienced medical professionals with race experience
Medical Assistants – Experienced medical professionals with no previous race experience
Transportation – Clean driving record, no experience necessary
Pre-race Setup – Early arrival, no experience necessary
Post-race Breakdown – Extra day stay, no experience necessary

Volunteers will be required to provide their own transportation to and from the event as well as provide their own food. Volunteers who bring and use their own vehicles will be given a small compensation and will also be reimbursed for the gas they purchase during the race. Cell phones will be the primary method of communication for the volunteers on most of the course. Because cell phone coverage maybe spotty depending on your location and service provider, we will also be providing an additional $50 compensation to all volunteers who have a ham radio and ham radio license.

In addition to the fun times, good friends, and stories you will have to tell, all volunteers will receive a SWAG bag filled with all sorts of goodies from the race organization and our sponsors. All volunteers will also receive a free or discounted entry into a future Desert Winds race. Volunteers who stay on for the entire race, will receive two free individual athlete entries for a future six (6) or twelve (12) hour Desert Winds race (both athletes must be on the same team) or one free individual athlete entry for the twenty-four (24) hour Desert Winds race in 2011. Volunteers who can only stay for half of the race will receive one free individual athlete entry for a future six (6) or twelve (12) hour Desert Winds race or one half-price individual entry for the twenty-four (24) hour Desert Winds race in 2011.

If you have never worked on a race before, this is an excellent race for your first time. We’ll be gentle. If you are an experienced adventure racer or volunteer, we could really use your knowledge and experience to make this the best adventure race of 2010. We are currently working on getting an airline sponsor to provide us with discounted airfare to anyone working on or competing in the race.
