Nokia Coast To Coast: Launch of an Iconic New Scottish Multi-Sport Challenge
Rob Howard / 09.03.2010

The Nokia Coast to Coast is designed to become the defining multi-sport journey of the British Isles.
Imagine a route that traverses one of the most famous mountain landscapes in the world by bike, foot and boat; a journey that covers over 100 miles, including a marathon-worth on foot; that takes in some of the most iconic locations in the Scottish Highlands: Loch Ness, the Great Glen and Ben Nevis. This is a challenge open to all adventurers. Some will come to win; many will come purely to finish. All will leave having completed a truly defining journey through the mystery and lore of this ancient landscape.
The race has been on the drawing board at Detail Events for some time and a huge amount of planning has gone into ensuring the route, the format and the partnerships are in place to create a truly world-class event.
The inaugural edition takes place this September 18th and 19th and will entail a multi-sport journey from the sea shore at Nairn in North Eastern Scotland that follows the Great Glen corridor to Ballachulish on Scotland’s West Coast. The event culminates with a spectacular kayak crossing of Loch Leven to finish at the evocative Isles of Glencoe Hotel. With other highlights including a transition area at a 14th century Highland castle, kayaking stages on Loch Ness and a tidal sea Loch, on-road and off-road cycling and a superb trek/run stage on the shoulder of Ben Nevis, this is an outstanding Scottish adventure.
Participants can enter in one of 3 formats, designed for varying abilities of adventurer. The Challenger category sees participants face the journey over 2 days with a tented village provided as overnight accommodation at Fort Augustus, situated at the foot of Loch Ness. The Racer category takes the same route, but is completed in 1 day. Both classes feature short kayak stages using the event’s own fleet of boats and full logistical support is provided by the event. These categories are open to solo racers or pairs.
For true multi-sport aficionados, there is also the Expert category, covering predominantly the same route as Challenger and Racer, but with a fantastic open water kayaking section on Loch Ness offered within the format. Experts will be supported by an athlete’s own support crew-person (with a car or van) and will use their own kayaks throughout, plus the choice to utilise various bike types. This category is for solo competitors only and there is a strict entry limit of 50 competitors in this category.
