1064 Mile Endurance Challenge In Six And A Half Days For Cancer Research

Press Release / 10.03.2011
In April two seasoned elite UK adventure racers, Bruce Duncan and Anthony Emmet, are going to take on the biggest challenge of their lives to raise valuable funds for Cancer Research UK. The Epic Tri is a triathlon with a difference - a 65 mile run over 42 mountain tops followed by 874 miles of almost non stop tandem cycling and finishing with a 125 mile kayak race, all to be completed in only six and a half days.

The Epic Tri is a combination of three of the longest and toughest endurance challenges the UK has to offer, with Duncan and Emmet tackling these in quick succession. The Epic Tri begins with The Bob Graham Round, a legendary 65 mile run over 42 mountain tops in the Lake District to be completed within 24 hours.

Duncan and Emmet will follow this with 874 miles of almost non-stop cycling from John O'Groats to Lands End (the length of the UK mainland) on a tandem in a target time of sixty hours. This monster adventure race will finish with the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race, a 125 mile and 77 portage kayak race on the river Thames, which they hope to finish in 24 hours. They will start The Bob Graham on Monday 18 April and they expect to reach Westminster Bridge in London on Sunday 24 April, a total of six and a half days.

Bruce Duncan and Anthony Emmet both wanted to do something for charity but as extreme endurance athletes they felt they couldn't get away with running a 10km fun run to raise money for Cancer Research. They are more at home racing for days on end in the middle of nowhere for hundreds of kilometers without rest. As a result they conceived this challenge of epic proportions. They know they will suffer a lot but at the end of it they know they can stop and recover and are well aware that many cancer sufferers don't have the luxury of being able to stop and turn off their pain.

Bruce Duncan, three times winner of the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race and Winner of the 2010 Nokia Coast to Coast Adventure Challenge - Expert category, said: 'The Epic Tri will be a huge undertaking, it will far outweigh any of the huge multisport adventure races we have done before but with a personal incentive we will push through the pain to raise as much as we can for Cancer Research'
