Redwood Creek London Rat Race Celebrates Fifth Birthday With More Capital Capers Promised

Press Release / 19.07.2011
This year will see the running of the fifth annual Redwood Creek London Rat Race, on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th September, promising Urban Adventure, mayhem, physical and mental challenges, spectacular locations and iconic landmarks as the UK’s capital city converts to an adventure sport playground for the weekend.

By the end of the two-day race programme over 10,000 people will have taken part in the London event during its five-year history. During that time challenges have encompassed spectacular locations including abseils from Twickenham Rugby Stadium and The Oval Cricket Ground. Competitors have also kayaked around the Docklands, scrambled over cargo nets at the Imperial War Museum, pulled army trucks across the Honourable Artillery Club, swum in the wake of Olympic swimmers and mountain biked over, around and through the capital’s most well known landmarks.

Humour also features heavily in the Rat Races and competitors have criss-crossed London’s labyrinth of well-travelled city streets armed with an obligatory A to Z and a list of fiendish clues and oblique references to challenges, historical figures, mathematical conundrums, anagrams, fashion, literature, sport, geography and the arts.

Jellied eels, pie and mash, Krispy Kreme Donuts have all been devoured along the way while visits to Sweeny Todd’s for a demon shave, a quick box at the Original Fight Club, karaoke, sumo, a three legged race and a clamber over HMS Belfast’s guns have also all featured in the UK’s leading Urban Adventure Race.

This year’s event again features the tried and trusted two-day ‘Mean Streets’ and ‘Nine to Five’ format; Saturday’s West End and City based Mean Streets is a two and a half hour checkpoint challenge on foot with a list of clues and problem solving that requires both a sense of humour and direction.

Sunday’s ‘Nine to Five’ Mountain Bike day provides the sense of adventure. Scenery changes from the urban grit of the city to the spectacular expanses of the suburban countryside as competitors cycle between running, abseiling and kayaking challenges.

Both days start and finish from the event village, situated in Potters Bar Fields in the shadow of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, which features live music, adventure sport challenges, food and drink and the fully equipped Rat Race Adventure Sport store.

In celebration of this shared sprit of adventure, Rat Racers’ and spectators will be able to toast their efforts with a great glass of Redwood Creek wine. Entry is £35 per person for Saturday’s ‘Mean Streets’ challenge, £69 per person for Sunday’s ‘Nine to Five’ or £99 for the Rat Race ‘Weekender’ package of both events.
