SALOMON Zugspitz Ultra Trail 2012

Press Release / 06.12.2011
In the coming year, Grainau will again become Trail Running Metropolis when, between June 22 and 24, the idyllic Zugspitze village hosts the second edition of the SALOMON ZUGSPITZ ULTRATRAIL. Two routes of different length will take up to 1000 participants around the summit of Germany's highest mountain, measuring 2,962 m.

The basic figures of the Ultratrails sound incredible keeping in mind that we are not talking about a stage race here: 103.0 kilometers of distance and 6,027 meters of elevation difference must be conquered in one day. The start may take place early in the morning but most of the participants won't reach the finish before nightfall or the early hours of the next day after running for more than 24 hours. The shorter Supertrail of about 71.5 kilometers distance and 3,720 meters of difference in elevation requires fighting spirit as well, for the last participants are not expected to reach the finish after less than 17 hours. The diverse course through the Wetterstein Mountains on fantastic trails and against a breathtaking backdrop will certainly reward the long-distance runners for their efforts.

Race director and head of routing Wolfgang Pohl is still in discussions with the governmental boards: „We would like to improve the second SALOMON ZUGSPITZ ULTRATRAIL by replacing some less interesting parts on asphalt or streets with versatile trails. This would really raise the attractiveness and the standard of the race.“

This trail running highlight offers unforgettable impressions, athletic highlights, a chance to experience the beauty of nature and pure emotions in the midst of Germany's most beautiful mountains. Basically everybody can participate; however, the facts of this course speak for themselves. Experience in high alpine territory as well as very good stamina and coordination skills are essential and require thorough preparation. Participants will pass 10 feed zones with timekeeping before reaching the finish in the destination village of Grainau. In order to minimize the risks for athletes, the rules and regulations require that participants undergo a medical check and carry specific equipment such as warm, weatherproof clothes, first aid kit, headlamp and water container, because, however strong the love for adventure and desire for challenges may be, safety comes first.

For fans, friends and family, too, a lot is being offered in Grainau. At the running fair, numerous exhibitors will be providing information about the latest trends and products and the atmosphere is sure to be awe-inspiring when the happy finishers begin arriving in the evening. The registration for the SALOMON ZUGSPITZ ULTRATRAIL has now, seven months before the start, been opened. Conditions for participation as well as more information about the SALOMON ZUGSPITZ ULTRATRAIL is available at www.zugspitz-ultratrail.com
