1000 Trail Runners Tackle the Sting in the Tail on the Kentmere Trail

News Release / 21.05.2012

This will be the 9th year for the Lakeland Trails event at Staveley, taking place on Saturday 26th May. The biggest number of competitors ever will be taking part in the various events, with just over 1000 trail runners from all over the UK, along with overseas visitors from Australia, USA, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and Ireland. The first event in Staveley was held in 2004 with just 80 competitors, and since then, the event has grown and grown.

New for 2012 is the addition of a shorter 10km Kentmere Trail Run, setting off at 11.00am, with the longer distance 17km Kentmere Trail competitors setting off in two waves at 13.00pm and 14.00pm. All take in the infamous "Sting in the Tail" on Reston Scar with just over 1km to go before the finish. Everyone finishing with earn a Survivor's technical T shirt memento.

The Lakeland Trails are family friendly sporting festivals, taking place on environmentally sustainable bridleways and the start/finish arena will be on Staveley Recreation Ground. The fabulous Kookaburra All Stars samba drumming band and singer/songwriter Pete Lashley will be preforming live throughout the day, and there are trade & retail stands, food and drink stalls, kid's entertainments including bouncy castle, face painting, children's Fun runs and a live commentary with MC.

Last year's winners, the GB International husband and wife team of Russell and Pippa Maddams (Keswick AC), return to defend their titles in the 17km race, although GB Internationals James Smith (Leeds City AC) and Anna Lupton (Radcliffe AC) will prove hard to beat.

Richard Leafe, Chief Executive of the Lake District National Park Authority will be running in the 17km race.

The event is supporting the local Kendal Mountain Rescue charity involved with marshalling the event, along with other regional and national charities and thousands of pounds will be raised for these charities from the event.

Event sponsors and partners included lifestyle brand PUMA, hydration partner NUUN, R and R Photos, Wilson's Kendal Mint Cake, Pete Bland Sports, Trailrunning.co.ukTrekandRun.comSleepmonsters.com, Kendal Mountain Rescue and Staveley Recreation Ground.

I have attached some low res images from last year's event and if you need any of these in higher resolution, please do not hesitate to get back in touch with me.
