First Ever International Ultra Running Event in Bhutan

Here’s a chance to be part of a global first: the first ever international running race to take place in the Kingdom of Bhutan. This 6-day, 200 km staged ultramarathon will take place over the first week of June, 2013.

Bhutan is a small country in the Himalayas, near Nepal, but bordering on China and India. It is one of the most difficult countries in the world to visit, because it charges a fee of $250 US per day to visitors. (This fee is included in the race registration fee, as is transport to and from Paro airport, and all food accommodation throughout the race).

Daily race stages range from 28 km to 55 km in length, with an easier 14 km on the final day. Here, however, elevation will be more of a challenge than the daily distances - with the race taking place at elevations ranging from 2000 m to several passes at around 3500 m. A highlight of the race will be a stage terminating at the Phajoding Monastery, where racers will camp for the night as well as fulfill the young monks’ greatest desire by playing a soccer game against them - a day and evening which will no doubt make for an unforgettable cultural experience.

The whole event runs May 31 to June 8th, 2013, with the six running stages taking place June 2nd through 7th. Because of the challenging nature of the destination, registration will be limited to a very small field. For more information, visit the organizers' website:
