New Website Promotes Isle Of Man Extreme Sport

News Release / 13.01.2013

A new website, 'ManXtreme.com, promoting the programme of extreme sports and events on the Isle of Man has been launched by local sports organisers.

The Isle of Man is already a well established location for some of the world’s best extreme sports and activities, on the back of the world famous TT Races and several other renowned existing events. There are also a stream of world class professional cyclists emerging from the Island, headed by Tour de France Green Jersey holder and last year's world road cycling champion, Mark Cavendish, and Team Sky member Peter Kennaugh, who recently won a Gold medal in track cycling at the London 2012 Olympics.

The extreme sports programme features 28 events held annually and  includes some of the toughest running and mountain biking events in the British Isles as well as extreme sport adventure races, long distance walking events, cycling events including time trial races on the iconic TT Mountain course, open water swimming challenges, ultra distance runs and fell races across the Island’s Snaefell Mountain.

The calendar includes the popular End 2 End Mountain Bike Race – the opportunity to mountain bike from one end of a country to the other; the gruelling 85 mile Parish Walk through all 17 of the Island’s parishes; the Lighthouse Challenge – a 100 mile Cycling Sportive that takes in spectacular views of the UK and Ireland, the Easter Athletics Running Festival, the three day Port Erin Bay off road triathlon, the 'Longest Day, Longest Ride' 24 hour Midsummer Mountain bike challenge and the dawn to dusk ‘Race the Sun’ Ultra.

The new website – www.ManXtreme.com - features details of the full calendar and events as well as information on other sporting activities on the Isle of Man including sea kayaking, coasteering, surfing, kite surfing and windsurfing as well as open water swimming.  The site will also feature downloadable maps and GPS mobile apps for some of the best natural mountain bike circuits in the British Isles as well as detailed runs and walks.

Visitors to the site will be able to pay for any of the events online via the ManXtreme.com website and can book travel and accommodation packages for any of the events, or create their own Isle of Man sports experiences. The site includes a directory of all of the event organisers, sports equipment suppliers as well as other useful contact details for an extreme Manx sporting experience.

Extreme Kayaker Keirron Tastagh, who runs ‘Adventure Week’ on the Isle of Man from 15th to 23rd June 2013, believes that the Isle of Man has everything the thrill seeker requires: “The Isle of Man has the perfect terrain and weather for a wide range of really testing events in varying conditions. All of the events in the ManXtreme programme require a good level of fitness but we also have events, courses and training weekends throughout the year that would suit anyone from beginners to pros.”

2011 Cycling World Champion Mark Cavendish commented*:  "The Isle of Man is the best place in the world to ride a bike. You’ve got the wind, the terrain, the small roads and the hills. It's perfect. There's a massive cycling community, and every day, no matter the weather, there'll be a group of people going out. The Manx dialect is good for banter. You can go out for four hours and there might not be a serious word spoken. I absolutely love it."
