On Saturday 1st June 2013, over 1,600 runners and spectators gathered at a sun kissed Staveley Recreation Ground to take part in the Lakeland Trails’ anniversary event, marking the 10th year of the annual trail running series in Cumbria.

The blue riband 17km Kentmere Trail race was won by Asics athlete, Adam Speers in 01:09:56. Adam, who is Jonathan Brownlee’s house mate, was followed almost 2 minutes later by Marcus Scotney of Howgill Harriers in a time of 01:11:47. Third place was taken by Eden Runners’ John French. The first lady across the finish line in 01:26:36 was unattached runner Hannah Phillips from North Allerton.

Local athlete Will Jackson from Helm Hill, who was celebrating his 17th birthday on the same day, won the 10km Kentmere Trail event in 36:29. Katherine Brownlee, unattached from Edinburgh, was the first lady and also fourth overall in 42:45.

Lakeland Trails event director Graham Patten, who was praised by fellow runners at the prize giving ceremony, said, “I always wanted to share my experience of trail running in the alps with people in the UK and I was astonished there was nothing already taking place somewhere as beautiful as the Lake District. Ten years on, it’s great to see so many people of all abilities enjoying our trail running events and we're proud that during this time we’ve raised over £100,000 for various charities, as well as providing a boost of over £10 million to the regional economy. Celebrating this landmark with so many friends and familiar faces, back in the place where it all started with our first Garburn Trail, makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Other events on the day included the non competitive 17km Kentmere Trail challenge, which like the 17km and 10km races took in the summit of Reston Scar, dubbed ‘the sting in the tail’ by the Lakeland Trails team. Runners and spectators were also able to enjoy the children’s fun trails, as well a wide range of food, drink and entertainment, including sets from samba drumming band The Kookaburra All Stars and singer song writer Pete Lashley.

The next event in the 2013 Lakeland Trails series is the marathon and half marathon in Coniston on the 7th July. The event is almost full and interested runners are being encouraged to enter online before the deadline of Sunday 9th June.
