On Sunday 7th July, Coniston will hold host to the third Lakeland Trails Marathon. Starting from Coniston Hall Landing Point, the Lakeland Trails Marathon and Half Marathon Challenge and Races will depart throughout the morning, with the Marathon Challenge setting off first at 07:00.
Over 1,200 runners have entered the event with competitors travelling from across the UK and abroad, with overseas visitors coming from: Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Ethiopia, Japan, South Africa, USA, Canada, Holland, France, Germany and Belgium.
The men’s marathon start list includes 2012 winner and course record holder Ben Abdelnoor from Ambleside AC, 2011 winner Alex Brooks and Keswick’s Carl Bell. The 42.2km marathon takes in a complete circuit of Coniston Water, passing Tarn Hows and Beacon Tarn and provides views of The Old Man, Swirl How, Wetherlam and Dow Crags. The half marathon utilises the first 17km section of the marathon course as far as Tarn Hows, before heading back to Coniston. Each course will be marshalled by friends of Coniston Mountain Rescue, as well as 14 members of Kendal Ladies Hockey Club, both of whom will receive donations for their support on the day.
Both distances will be chip timed and all finishers will be rewarded with a medal, technical t-shirt, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding and Lakeland Trails’ goody bag.
Pre-event registration will be open between 14:30 and 19:00 on Saturday the 6th July at Coniston Tourist Information Centre, with registration on the day taking place in Coniston Hall. Race day entertainment will be provided by singer song writer Pete Lashley, which will be followed by the prize giving ceremony at 15:30.
